1-On-1 With Code and Theory about the Ebony.com Redesign
In its 66-year history as a premier black-owned publication, Ebony magazine has become synonymous with many things: Moving portrayals of life in black America, in-depth interviews with national figures and iconic images of civil rights legends to name a few. A visually striking website, however, hasn’t been on the list - until now.
The magazine recently unveiled a dramatically revamped Ebony.com, trading a static, functional site for a slicker, custom-designed format complete with trendy typography, piles of visuals and enough interactive bells and whistles to impress even the most jaded web surfer.
It’s the handiwork of bi-coastal interactive agency Code and Theory, whose designers say historic brands like Ebony are pushing the envelope and taking more design risks as they secure their space in an increasingly digital publishing world.
